“The good seaman weathers the storm he cannot avoid and avoids the storm he cannot weather.”
― Unknown
After the hydra, you just can't seem to catch a break. The winds whip around the Oaken Inkwell, threatening to tear the sails from the masts. Great waves rise like dark hills, tossing the ship like a handful of pebbles. Below the deck, scurvy has struck.
Dare:
Your gums are tender and swollen and your face is green as scurvy and the tossing waves begin to get the better of you. You hadn’t truly appreciated before now that there was no going back. Write the next 500 words without backspacing or erasing anything.
Ambiance:
Lightning splits the sky as rumbling thunder, roaring waves, and screaming winds shatter your very bones. As if getting sick could be any worse! At least the rain hitting the deck leaves something of a calming rhythm.
Prompt:
One crewman was a barber before the sea, so he was entrusted with the leeches. One by one, the ill crew members underwent bloodletting to flush out the bad blood of disease. You wish you'd gotten more apples, after that urchin robbed you back at port so long ago, so you didn’t have to bear the slimy critters sucking your blood. The sweet flesh of fruit fights the disease– a simpler solution to the issue. Write about a ridiculously simple solution to a big problem.
Question:
Small, seemingly unimportant events, such as having a few apples stolen from you, have a habit of resulting in great consequences. What are some things your character has done, or will do, that will have great consequences, good or bad?
